Highlands

Highlands Located 130 miles northeast of Atlanta, Ga. and 80 miles west of Asheville, N.C. is the town of Highlands, North Carolina.  Found in a luxurious forest of hemlock and white pine, with undergrowth of azalea, rhododendron and laurel, almost every acre has springs of clear, pure water.  This beautiful area of rugged mountains is known as the Highlands Plateau and is part of the Blue Ridge mountain range.

The area has an abundance of wildlife that thrive, because of its remoteness that includes black bears, deer, grouse, turkey and birds.

The towns of Highlands and Cashiers were founded in the late 1800’s by Mr. Kelsey and Mr. Hutchinson who saw the area as a stopping off place for travel north and south.  Even though the area is one of the most beautiful mountain spots, it was originally selected because of its location. If you draw one line between Chicago and Savannah, Ga. and another line between New York and New Orleans they intersect at Highland, N.C.  Mr. Kelsey and Mr. Hutchinson saw the area as a center of commerce and travel.  Little did they imagine that it would become one of the most valued areas for luxury homes as primary residences and second homes in the nation.

With its quaint, scenic setting, the Highland/Cashiers area is unique. Small in size, the area has all the major attributes of a large city.  We have a new and outstanding shopping, art center, libraries, and a new modern hospital to serve the community.  We are surrounded by National and State forests with numerous trails, waterfalls, and scenic lakes where our native and stocked trout are fished by locals and is boosted as some of the finest trout water in America.

The area attracts visitors because of the warm hospitality of the locals. Some of the best golfing can be found in the area, inside communities where special attention is displayed through their love of the game and pride in their course.

Cashiers Perched at 3,500 feet on the Eastern Continental Divide, and accented by countless waterfalls and long-range mountain views, Cashiers is more than more than a crossroads at the junction of U.S. 64 and North Carolina 107.

Right from the pages of a Rockwell painting, the delightful downtown is a little less then a mile but offers a plethora of antique shops, quaint coffee shops, and high-end restaurants.

Located a mear 8 miles from Cashiers, North Carolina is the incredible Lake Glenville.  Since 2002, its official name is "Lake Glenville" as the natives refer to it, but is still listed as "Thorpe Reservoir" on many maps. The lake has a 26 mile shoreline and has the highest elevation of any lake east of the Mississippi..

Lake Toxaway At an elevation of 2979 feet and comprising 640 acres, Lake Toxaway is the largest privately held lake in North Carolina. The lake was filled originally in 1902 by E. H. Jennings, who was inspired by the natural beauty of the area. Jennings was responsible for building the Toxaway Inn. The inn was a popular resort for the rich and famous and included guests Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, and Thomas Edison.

The Toxaway Inn was demolished in the 1940s after being vacant for nearly 30 years as a result of the lake draining due to the damage to the dam. In the 1960's, The Greystone Inn and Counry club was built and the lake was rebuilt to entice vistors and growth the the area.

The homes in this are nestled in the trees and ofter an absloute serene atomsphere. You can hear the Lake Toxaway Falls, a 150-foot waterfall, from one mile away.
